The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Competitors are granted the ability to challenge particular calls made by the official, following the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
